Where Are You Going?

St. John 14:1-14

In ancient times and in modern day, having a clear sense of direction greatly depends on having the correct information and proper invitation that will lead you to the right location and destination. Come and go with me to my Father’s house!

“Where are you going?” is a question that Jesus asked of his troubled in heart and troubled in mind disciples. There were only two disciples that expressed their personal concern to the statement that he made. Thomas expressed his skepticism of how to get to the place that Jesus told him that he had already prepared for him and Philip expressed his curiosity as to the true identity of Jesus.

Here in our text, Jesus answered both the skepticism of Thomas and curiosity of Philip in his statement in St. John 14:6 and 7 stating “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you have known me, you would have known my Father also, and from now on you know him and have seen him.”

Jesus knew that he was going to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Jewish Passover when Mary and Joseph took him as it was according to custom. Jesus knew that he was going to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. Jesus knew that he would go into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil for forty days and forty nights. Jesus knew that he was going to Simon Peter’s mother-in-law’s house to heal her of scarlet fever. Jesus knew that he was going to a banquet at Matthew’s house to celebrate his conversion. Jesus knew that he was going to a marriage feast in Cana of Galilee where he turned six stone pots of water into wine. Jesus knew that he was going to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray that the bitter cup of the sins of the world would be passed from him. Jesus knew that he was going to the last supper where, when supper had ended, he laid aside his garment, took a towel and girded himself, poured water into a basin and began to wash his Disciples feet.

In modern days, are you going to Sunday School? Are you going to Bible Study? Are you going to choir rehearsal? Are you going to usher board meetings? Are you going to the fifth week Union? Are you going to Church School Convention? Are you going to State and/or National Convention?

Where are you going? Come and go with me to my Father’s house. In my Father’s house are many mansions: If it were not so, I would not have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also. The entrance to my Father’s house has twelve gates to the city with the twelve names of the tribes of Israel. The gates are made of pearl and the streets are pure gold. Do you want to go with me to my Father’s house? Thomas is in my Father’s house no longer with any doubt of the location and Philip is also there with no dispute over who the Father and Son are.

No man comes to the Father unless by the Son. Jesus is the Way to my Father’s house. Be ye a follower of me as I am a follower of Christ.
